The IU Southeast men’s basketball team made senior night memorable on Wednesday with an 83-64 win over Brescia University. The seniors combined for 56 of the 83 points.
Five graduating Grenadiers were honored before the game at center court in front of a packed house. Kevin Mitchell, Kegan Clark, Greg Magee, Cameron Mitchell and Vernon Payne will don their IUS jerseys for one more regular season game at St. Louis Pharmacy on Saturday.
“I’m going to miss Coach Wiley the most,” Kevin Mitchell, senior guard, said.
Kevin Mitchell and Vernon Payne, senior center, each scored 13 points to lead the Grenadiers.
IUS shot 50 percent (15-30) in the first half, while forcing Brescia in to 12 turnovers, to take a 42-23 advantage at intermission.
Brescia never got closer than 13 points the rest of the game as IUS kept up the defensive pressure. The team finished with 12 blocks, including five by the senior Payne alone.
Among aspirations by the seniors for post-graduation, Cameron Mitchell, senior guard, has plans to play basketball overseas as well as continue his schooling and earn his Master’s degree.
Before that, though, the Grenadiers still have some basketball to play. With a 16-0 conference record and 23-3 overall, including being unbeaten at home, IUS has their goals set on becoming national champions.
On Tuesday, No. 2 ranked Grenadiers will open the KIAC tournament as the one seed at home.
