Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in America.
The Alpha Phi sorority held an on-campus event Feb. 4 called “Wear Red Day.”
The day was meant to help raise awareness about heart disease.
Anna Loos, fine arts sophomore, is the president of marketing for Alpha Phi and coordinated the event.
“We are having this event because cardiac care is our philanthropy,” Loos said. “Philanthropy is just a cause that our sorority has a common interest in to give money to.”
The event was advertised by saying everyone wears red to raise awareness, and would receive red ribbons outside the IUS Bookstore to show support.
“I only saw an ad for the event on Facebook, and I didn’t really see anything else going on in the Student O to make people aware of the event,” Whitney Gardner, advertising senior, said.
The Alpha Phi’s ribbons were attached to a paper with heart-healthy tips on it.
“We were going to hand out ribbons in the halls, but there were no people around,” Loos said. “We just handed them out in the Student O instead, but we’ll be handing them out all month in front of the bookstore.”
During the advertised time for the event, there were no Alpha Phi’s handing out ribbons.
“When I was in the Student O during lunch, it seemed like just a regular day with everyone sitting around eating,” Gardner said. “I wouldn’t have known there was an event going on if I was an outsider that came down there.”
Gardner said she thought the event was kind of successful because some people did wear ribbons.
“Wear Red Day” is one of a few events the group will be holding this semester.
“Every Wednesday in February, the cafeteria will be serving a heart-healthy lunch,” Loos said. “Also, we will be having an Alpha Fit event in the Hoosier Room on the 23rd. It is just a bunch of cardio workouts.”
They will also be having blood pressure check-ups and a red dress luncheon later in the semester.
