Campus Life hosted the annual Wii Bowling for Kids Sake on March 2, in the Hoosier Room, to raise money for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America organization.
This was the third year for the event.
Brittany Hubbard, director of Financial Aid and interim director of the Academic Success Center, organized the event.
Hubbard said the event began at IU Southeast with a friend of hers, Stacey Hamilton-Nance, employee of the local office Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana.
“We had always done a team together to do bowling at an actual lane,” Hubbard said, “and she said she was interested in doing Wii Bowling.”
Hubbard said the event raised more money this year than in the past.
In the last two years, the event raised about $1,000 each year. This year the event raised more than $1,500.
“We were very pleased with the turnout,” Hubbard said. “We set our goal this year at $1,300, and we exceeded that.”
Hubbard said participants needed to raise at least $40 in pledges to compete. She said most bowling leagues charge $80 in pledges, but she wanted to make it affordable for students, as well as staff and community members.
“We would really like to get more student involvement,” she said.
Hubbard said she was pleased with the turnout. She said about 30 people came, including students, staff and community members.
“I’d always like to see more people,” Hubbard said. “We raised a significant amount of money without that many people showing up, but I’d love to see more people show up.”
Although the university is not an official partner of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Hubbard said she will continue the event as long as she can.
“This is just something Stacey and I do because we believe in the Big Brothers Big Sisters mission,” Hubbard said. “So, we’ll continue to do it as long as it continues to be fun.”
