Zombified prom kings and queens filled the Hoosier Room for the first ever Zombie Prom, hosted by the English Club on Nov. 2.
Students engaged in an open-mic reading session to start the night, snacked on food and danced the night away, zombie style.
The open mic reading session included poems and fiction pieces written by students.
Karyl Anne Geary, English senior and president of the English Club, said they hosted the event to do something fun and try to attract some new members for the English Club.
“We wanted to do a big event,” Geary said. “Last year we had a masquerade ball, so we just wanted to do something different, and we know zombies are big right now.”
Everyone at Zombie Prom was dressed in their finest attire. From ball gowns to tuxedos, these zombies looked sharp.
Stacy Lintz, English senior and vice president of the English Club, said she got the idea to have a zombie prom from events she went to when she lived in Bloomington, Ind.
Lintz said last year the English Club had a masquerade ball and a zombie walk.
Lintz said the English Club had the zombie walk during the hottest part of the year and the ball during the coldest part of the year.
“I wanted to bring them both together and do one event that incorporated both events,” Lintz said.
Lintz said they knew last year they wanted to do at least one dance this year.
Lintz said they try to do one dance or big event every year.
“This was the event we decided was going to be our big one,” Lintz said, “so we put everything into this one.”
David Mitchell of Absolute Audio Video & Entertainment was the DJ for the Zombie Prom event. Mostly hip-hop music was played at the event, along with a few zombie-themed songs, such as Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”
Lintz said her goal for the Zombie Prom was to bring students to campus for events other than just going to class.
“It was really just a way to get everybody together to have a good time,” Lintz said. “Mid-terms have just ended, and we’re all at that point where we’re ripping our hair out, and we’re exhausted. I’m just ready to hangout.”
Madison Spear, English senior and secretary of the English Club, said they are trying to get the word out that the English Club is fun to be a part of.
“We’re not a bunch of nerds with our noses in books all the time,” Spear said.
Lintz said her favorite part of the night was having all of the English Club members together.
“There is definitely a huge writing community here on campus this year,” Lintz said. “We’re all very supportive of each other.”
Lintz said everyone in the English Club is very involved, and she loves that.
“No matter how hard you try, sometimes you just don’t get people who want to get involved,” Lintz said. “This year, people are really getting involved, and that’s my favorite.”
Lauren Ogburn, chemistry senior, said had fun and enjoyed herself while participating in the Zombie Prom.
“I joined the English Club, but I’m not as involved as I’d like to be,” Ogburn said. “I’ve been looking forward to this since I joined.”
Domineque Heath, communications freshman, said she loved going to the Zombie Prom.
“I never went to my high school prom,” Heath said, “so if there’s a Zombie Prom, I’m going to go.”
