Park goers, observing prints and paintings by Jeaneen Barnhart, a local Louisville and longtime Art In Speed Park featured artist. Barnhart’s most popular piece, Secretariat, a depiction of the 1973 Triple Crown champion (far right) was featured at Barnhart’s booth as well.

Friends and families gather, Aug 26th, to celebrate the kick off of Art In Speed Park’s 27th anniversary.

Raku pottery by Philpot, KY artist Thomas Porter. Thomas work is influenced by his early trips to Japan, China and Korea, where he first learned about Raku, a technique where clay is glazed, fired in a kiln at a lower temperature than usual and then cooled very quickly in either combustible materials or water leaving the pieces with rich velvet shades and the signature crackle. Porter said this technique was currently his favorite as well as his most popularly bought pieces.

Robert Coomer and Julia Brown, observing self taught potter, Greg Neal’s work. Brown is an IUPUI student and says she makes it a point to come home every year to come to the show. Coomer said he had been coming since he was a kid. “I think buying pieces from local artist is what really makes the experience and gets people to come back [to Art In Speed Park], you are supporting someone’s passion.” Brown and Coomer both agreed.

Art In Speed Park Director, Kim Johnson, talking with park goers about the show. “It’s always a hectic weekend for me, trying to make sure everything is set up and everyone is pleased, but I think seeing everyone enjoying themselves and especially the weather [this year] makes it worth it.”

Ethan Johnson, IUS Senior and son of Art In Speed Park Director, visiting artist, Jennifer Meeker’s booth, a potter from Indianapolis, IN. “I always try to pick up a piece from one of the booths every year, it’s something fun and easy to get a cool collection of things going.” Johnson said this year, it was mugs he was in search of, Jennifer Meeker’s specialty.

A selection of 2017 Art In Speed Park tee shirts, designed by Doreen DeHart, were featured at the information booth for purchase to commemorate the weekend.

Robbie Bartlett, who has been performing around the Louisville area since the early 80’s, appeared as one of the many musical entertainment guest for the weekend; filling the park with her warm and sultry renditions of Frank Sinatra classics.
