Students and their families came to campus to enjoy a Mini-Carnival in McCullough Plaza.
The Children’s Hour Series, part of the Student Program Council, hosted the Mini-Carnival to welcome families to the campus. Michelle Harris, SPC chair of Children’s Hour Series, said she was pleased to see the families enjoying IU Southeast.
This was the second annual Children’s Festival, and SPC plans to continue the tradition.
For the organization, the most important factor in putting together an event like this is to create a fun atmosphere that also shows off the facility.
“It’s all for recognition for the university,” Harris said. “This is our way of giving back to the campus and to the community.”
The SPC set up an inflatable jumper, a
basketball-shooting game and an obstacle course. Snow cones were also provided, while the staff made cotton candy.
“A lot of students just come to campus, take their classes and then go home,” Harris said. “We don’t want that. We want them to enjoy our campus to keep them coming back.”
For Andrew Stillman, chemistry senior and volunteer for the event, he said he loves to see happy children.
“Seeing the families and children having fun is my favorite part of our events,” Stillman said. “At the Mini-Carnival, the children have a lot of fun with the games and the inflatables. It’s a great feeling to know that our event was a success when you see them having a good time.”
Stillman has participated in many of the activities hosted by the SPC. He also raced through the obstacle course with the children.
Other events the SPC will be hosting include the Purpose of Life on Oct. 24 and the Happy Halloween Bash on Oct. 29.
“We do this all for the families so that students and families can come out here and see what this campus is all about,” Harris said.
