Food Court aspires for catchy name

IU Southeast collected submissions for a new name for the Food Court. Students, faculty and staff were eligible to submit entries until March 9. All of the submissions were submitted via e-mail in order for Dining Services to have the date and time postmarked. More than 60 names wore submitted. Julie Ingram, director of Conference and Catering, gave some insight as to why the Food Court decided to change its name.

IT Department brings new wave of communication

The IT Department at IU Southeast is bringing in a new phone system for faculty and staff called UniCom. Indiana University’s term for UniCom is United Communication Service, which uses Microsoft Lync to emerge voice and data together. It is a unified desktop communication system that provides instant messaging, telephoning, e-mail, desktop sharing and audio video conferencing. The new phone system will cost around $200 for each phone and an optional headset is about $150.

Education program creates relationships with schools

The Elementary Education Program has joined with Jefferson County elementary schools, including King, Byck, Sanders and Bowen, to construct a new program partnership. This will enable elementary education majors a chance to gain teaching experiences while attending IU Southeast. Gloria Murphy, dean of the School of Education, provided some insight on why the Education Department chose to utilize these four schools. “The reason why we hand-picked these schools to do a partnership with us is because these schools have diverse settings and environments,” Murphy said.

Professor presents power of Sex and The Brain

The Sex and The Brain Workshop was held at the University Center North, room 127, on Feb. 14. This event was hosted by the IUS Psychology Club. The presenter of the workshop was Meghan Kahn, assistant professor of psychology, who specializes in the brain. About 85 students attended this workshop. Several topics arose in discussion at the workshop. Kahn presented a Power Point on sex and how it affects the brain. She gave comparisons to how animals attract mates and how far they will go to in order to attract one another. Kahn compared the behavior of humans showing how they were similar and how they differ from one another.

White Out pumps up spirit

The White Out event took place in the Activities Building on Feb. 11. It kicked off homecoming students and alumni school spirit. IUS students came out to support the men’s and women’s basketball teams to celebrate the Grenadiers basketball homecoming. Festivities at the event included free Papa John’s pizza, sponsored by the Athletic Department.

The IUS Résumé Preparation Workshop was an informative and educational event that took place in University Center North, room 112 on Feb. 1. This workshop was offered by the Career Development Center. Trey Lewis, director of the Career Development Center, greeted students before presenting his résumé Power Point. Lewis said the four components a student should use are what, when, why and how.

Band coach aspires to higher notes

Jennifer Spainhour, head coach of the pep band, is a newly hired employee of the IUS Athletic Department since October 2011. She is also a part-time band director, and she said she provides pep band students with the opportunity to play pop tunes during basketball games and pumping up the crowd with energy. Joe Glover, athletic director, spoke about the purpose of pep band performing at games and what they offer.

Lady Grenadiers bag the Bearcats

The IUS women’s basketball team beat the Brescia University Bearcats with a score of 71-45 on Jan. 17. This was the Grenadiers 14th victory this season, moving their record up to 14-6 overall. Megan Murphy, senior forward, was 5-13 from the field. She retrieved two steals, 13 rebounds and scored a total of 17 points and three assists.

Athletic trainer strives to keep athletes alive

Tiffany Hammond, head athletic trainer, has been working in the sports medicine scene at IU Southeast since 2002 and has worked at the Athletics Department for 10 years. Hammond provides athletic training for all seven intercollegiate varsity sports at IU Southeast. She is also a full-time head athletic trainer contracted through Kourt. “[My most memorable experience is] getting to work with the athletes and returning them to play after being hurt,” Hammond said.
