Grenadiers gobble up competition

The IUS women’s basketball team swept the IU Southeast Thanksgiving Tournament for women’s basketball on Nov. 16-17. The Grenadiers broke national and conference records in the first game against St. Mary-of-the-Woods, and went on to defeat Mid-Continent University to win the tournament. This was the first women’s basketball tournament hosted by IU Southeast in three years.

The IUS men’s basketball team defeated Mid-Continent University in their fifth game of the season on Nov. 17. The narrow victory brought their record to 3-2. Tyrell Means, sophomore guard, scored 14 points for the Grenadiers. “I feel like I did what was needed,” Means said. “I played a lot harder than I usually do. I’m glad I could help the team.”

Grenadiers picked to win KIAC tournament

The IUS men’s and women’s basketball teams both topped the coaches’ poll for the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 2012-13 season. Each coach in the division conference nominates the team they expect to win the conference tournament at the end of the season. The men’s team has won the KIAC tournament for the past five consecutive years, and the women’s team has won the past four years.

Grenadiers chop down St. Mary-of-the-Woods

The IUS women’s basketball team set multiple records in the first game of the women’s Thanksgiving Tournament hosted by IU Southeast. The Grenadiers dominated St. Mary-of-the-Woods with a final score of 148-101 to set personal and national records. The Grenadiers came close to securing the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Record Award for most points scored in a single game and in a single half.

IUS groups get out vote by hosting registration

Politically-affiliated campus groups hosted a voter registration drive to give students a chance to participate in the 2012 local and national elections. The event took place in the Hoosier Room on Oct. 1 and 8. The College Democrats sponsored the registration drive along with the ONE organization. College Republicans and the IUS Civil Liberties Union also had tables at the event.

Psi Chi honored as model chapter

The Psi Chi and Psychology Club received its second award as a model chapter from the International Psi Chi Honor Society. The psychology club was given a certificate to represent the honor. “Basically, it’s showing that we’re a good chapter doing a lot of good work,” Todd Manson, assistant professor of psychology and faculty co-adviser for Psi Chi, said. Manson said the club was awarded the honor for several reasons, including hosting campus events, inducting a record number of new members in the previous two years and having students present research at regional conferences.

IUS votes to keep general studies despite budget cuts

After closing the central administrative offices for the School of Continuing Studies at IU Bloomington in June, the IUS General Studies Program remains on campus despite the discontinuation of Non-credit Programs. The decision was made by an advisory board of deans after Indiana University allowed the eight regional campuses to continue some form of the programs. Gilbert Atnip, former vice chancellor of Academic Affairs, said the closure was a money-saving measure.

Family involvement stretches beyond campus

A group of nearly 100 non-traditional students, including their family members, gathered at the Louisville Zoo on Sept. 15 for a day of learning, fun and to share memories among exotic animals from around the world. Each attendee picked up their free ticket at the IU Southeast welcome table from Kimberly Pelle, coordinator for Non-traditional Student Programs, with her assistant, Yvonne Bagshaw, general studies sophomore and non-traditional student. “Coming to the zoo is not cheap,” Pelle said. “We can give them a free ticket, so it cuts down on costs, and they can bring their families.”

Personal reasons connect students to donations

Her face crinkled. Her body cringed. She felt the pinch as the needle broke her skin, but Jade Veirs, biology freshman, said she knew it was a good thing. For years, Veirs has been donating at blood drives, such as the one held at IU Southeast by the Red Cross. “I usually have to psych myself out,” Veirs said. “I’ll start off the day feeling great, and, then, as I get closer and closer, I remember I don’t like needles.”

Students scavenge Louisville at WorldFest

The plush, behemoth of a coach bus lumbered to a curb stop at Louisville’s Belvedere entrance. IUS students poured out and scattered up the concrete ramp into the 10th annual WorldFest for the free, three-day event, hosted by the city of Louisville, to display its growing cultural diversity. The event highlighted food, music and culture from around the world. Spices sailed in the hot river breeze. The humidity carried distant rhythms of world music for blocks. After the bus arrived at the Belvedere entrance, most of the students headed straight into WorldFest, but a group of five students, led by Chris Cole, general studies senior, headed out on foot for the first IU Southeast scavenger hunt in downtown Louisville.

Pancakes fly at Chancellor’s Breakfast

Pancakes were served up circus-style at the third annual Chancellor’s Pancake Breakfast on Wednesday, Aug. 29. In the early morning hours, faculty, staff and students lined up on the breezeway for a chance to catch, snag and dive for pancakes being flipped, tossed and flung by John Young, owner of Chris Cakes, who catered the event. The pancake breakfast, hosted by Chancellor Sandra Patterson-Randles, was put together to welcome back returning students and give new students an introduction to the campus, as part of the campus-wide Week of Welcome.

Sorority upstages competition

The fifth annual Campus Boogie event on Aug. 30 at the Ogle Center in Knobview served as the unofficial close for the campus-wide Week of Welcome. Three cash prizes were up for grabs for the student groups who performed during the event. A judge’s panel comprised of three faculty and staff members commented on each performance, with the final vote decided by audience ballets.
