Horizon Guide to Kentucky Derby

A dazzling spectacle of vibrant, heart-racing fireworks, great food, live music, hot air balloons, big hats, over 400 roses and Mint Juleps, all leading up to the best two minutes in sports: the Kentucky Derby.

Kentucky Derby Festival consists of over 50 events, running through most of April and the first few days of May. Knowing what’s happening when can be difficult, so we’ve done some of the work for you.

CHOW WAGON

With a wide variety of food and 30 live concerts, it’s fun for everyone.

“This year, I will not be able to go, and I am kind of upset. I will miss the food and entertainment.” Jessica Sookal, communication junior, said.

Admission is free with a Pegasus Pin

GREAT BALLOON GLOW

Hot air balloons will inflate on the field, and the pilots will fire their burners, allowing the balloons to glow against the night sky to music.

When:

April 25. Gates open at 6 p.m. and Glow will begin at 9 p.m

Where:

Kentucky Expo Center

How Much:

Parking at the expo is $8, and admission is free with a Pegasus Pin

GREAT BED RACES

More than 40 teams will race on what they usually sleep on. Five-person teams build a bed on wheels and race. Awards for the fastest, best decorated, most entertaining, and the “cone eater” award (most traffic cones damaged during the race) will be presented.

When:

April 28 at 6 p.m.

Broadbent Arena

How Much:

Admission is free with a Pegasus Pin, but entry to be part of the races is $130, which includes T-shirts and a collectible pin

WINEFEST AND BEERFEST

These events are a chance to try wine from various wineries and samples of local and national craft beers.

“BeerFest is awesome, the VIP tickets are worth it,” Jessica Davis, psychology junior, said. “I love the sample mug they give you.”
