This is LaNia Robert’s “The Colored Gaze.” Roberts said she read Bell Hook’s “The Oppositional Gaze,” and said it enlightened her. “It enlightened me how African American slaves were punished if they looked and gazed at their masters,” Roberts said. She said the gaze meant they had power and that masters didn’t like their power to be questioned. In this piece, she said she created a picture standing over the audience to let them know she is owning the space she’s in and that she wanted to portray having the power.
